Propolis - Bee PropolisPropolis has many functions, used by bees in the construction of their hives. All of us know that bees make honey, but not many know that bees also produce a sticky brown resinous substance know as Propolis. The name propolis comes from the Greeks meaning "Defender of the City". The city of bees or hive being protected from the invasion from the outsiders, including the 'infection'. Bees produce propolis and use it to protect themselves and to create a most sterile environment. The use of Propolis as a natural remedy goes very far in history. However, the advantage of Propolis, unlike many other ‘natural’ remedies, is that there's a substantive database on the biological activity and safety of Propolis indicating that it has a range of beneficial effects in human health. Propolis resin is by nature antiseptic, antifungal and anti-bacterial. Propolis is furthermore non-acqueous. Flavoinoids detectable and tested are Quercetin, Galangin, Pinocembrin, Chrysin. Propolis also contains bioflavonids, essential oils, tre resin and waxes. Bioflavoids are one of the most important components in Porpolis. Bioflavonoids has antioxidant effects.
