Broom is easily recognized by its numerous, slender green branches growing straight upward and scantily covered by tiny leaves. Although not found in the Mediterranean regions, Broom is widely established on silicious soils. The plant has been judged to be an excellent remedy with outstanding draining properties since 1701. That year, the Maréchal de Saxe apparently followed the recommendations of Madame Fouquet and drank some Broom wine that cured him of a water retention disorder that had resisted all other treatment.
